Finish Information

All of our finishes we offer are hand crafted making each piece unique.  Everything is photographed in a variety of light settings.  We cannot guarantee that the finish pictured will match your actual item.  Finishes are meant to change over time as they are exposed to the elements. Finishes are different from each manufacture. Only the finishes listed in the “Available Finishes (opens in new window)” or in the finishes drop down menu are available for that particular item.

Base Finish:

Base finishes are hand applied and hand-rubbed finishes. They are first painted with a base coat, and then a secondary color is hand-rubbed to bring out the tones and highlights throughout the piece. Base finishes are more uniform in color.

Stain Finish:

Stained finishes are hand applied and hand-rubbed finishes.  With stained finishes, no two pieces will ever be alike.  The stain reacts with the mineral deposits of the concrete so that exact colors, tones and highlights will vary from piece to piece. Like any fine sculpture, its patina will change over time and take on a life of its own.

Natural Finish:

Natural finishes are the raw concrete material that has not had any paint or stain applied to the piece in any way. Natural finishes will show the lighter and darker areas of the piece when wet or dry.  These finishes will appear much like a standard concrete driveway and change over time.

Discontinued finishes:

On some items, you may see - (Finish Discontinued) next to the “Shown In” color.  Unfortunately, these finishes have been discontinued and are no longer available for purchase.  We can give suggestions towards a similar finish.  We are working to update our images so only available finishes are show.

Fountain Pools

Many of our fountains are offered with a variety of pool sizes and styles.  Some of the pools are interchangeable, a fountain may be pictured with a one piece concrete pool, but is also available with a fiberglass pool with sectional concrete surrounds, and vice versa. Please contact us for more information. There are 3 pool styles:

Fiberglass Pool with Sectional Concrete Surrounds:
Fiberglass pools are a one piece pool made of fiberglass and resin compounds, making the pool light but extremely durable.  Once the pool is put in place, the surrounds are placed around the pool. There are typically 4 or 6 surrounds.  This pool style is easier to install and can be installed without heavy equipment.  This pool type is ideal for backyards, existing landscaping, or areas where space is limited.

One Piece Concrete Pools:
One piece concrete pools are a pool made entirely of concrete that is one piece.  These pool types are extremely heavy.  A forklift is required to unload some of these pools and will also be necessary to install your fountain at your location. Forklifts and other equipment can easily be rented at your local equipment rental store.

Modular Pools:

Modular pools are a pool made of many different sections.  These pool types are extremely heavy.  A forklift is required to unload these pools and will also be necessary to install your fountain at your location.  These pools also require additional ground preparation and complete assembly of the pool; sections need to be mortared together.  These are the least common type and are ideal for commercial applications.

** All of our pool fountains can be purchased without the pool; if you have an existing pool or plan to make your own.  Please contact us for more information.**

Cast Stone Information

All of the fountains sold by GardenFountains-Direct.com are hand made in the United States. The process starts out with fiber reinforced concrete being poured into a detailed rubber mold and allowed to dry. Once dry, the fountain is removed from the mold and scrutinized to ensure exceptional quality. After the concrete has properly cured one of the signature finishes is applied by hand, resulting in a truly unique finish on every fountain.

Fountain Care Instructions

In preparation for winter months in freezing climates, it is important to properly care for your fountain.  Many of the fountain tiers will have drain plugs.  Remove these drain plugs and allow the tiers to drain (safely store your drain plugs).  If the tier does not have drain plugs, you will need a wet dry vac to remove the water. While the bowls are still damp, using clean water from a garden hose, gently spray the inside of the bowl as its damp/draining.  This will remove any debris and clean the bowls.  If there is any buildup, use a mild soap and sponge to clean any accumulation.  Never use any harsh cleaners/chemicals or stiff brushes as they will harm the finish.  If your pump is easily removable, it can be removed, if not, you may leave the pump in for the winter.

Concrete fountain bowls must be turned upside down on the pedestal (or a piece of wood) or laid on its side for the winter months. Smaller pieces can be stored inside, such as in a garage or shed. Doing this prevents freezing, cracking, or crumbling of the bowls. Make sure the piece cannot retain any water.

If you purchased a fountain cover, follow the above steps first.  You may need to remove the finial on some fountains.  Leaving the drain plugs out, follow the instructions that are included with your cover.  Once your cover is on, make sure to use the draw strings to secure it.  Periodically check your fountain cover over the winter months to make sure it is secure and no snow, water or ice is accumulating on the cover and make sure water cannot re enter the fountain.

Other Tips:

·    The bottom of the pedestal must be elevated off of the frost on a piece of wood or gravel for the winter months.

·    Do Not cover with plastic, use our specially designed fountain covers.

·    Pumps are designed to run up to 10 hours per day; and should be stored inside for winter if possible.

Preparing for Your Fountain

Your new fountain is sure to be the showpiece of your home or garden.  Here are some tips to help you make sure your installation goes smoothly.

Fountains are very heavy and it is important to have the proper foundation.  If you’re installing on a hard surface such as bricks or concrete, we recommend a treated piece of plywood under the base before installation (freezing climates only).  If your fountain will be in your garden, it is important to put a 4” – 8” thick base of gravel/stone down. We recommend you “dig out” the ground and replace the soil with gravel/stone.  We recommend the use of gravel/stone about the size of your thumb.  (This allows for drainage and leveling of the fountain.)  If you choose to use one of our Circular Ground Preparation Discs, use the same process, but only 4” depth is needed.

All of our fountains are self contained and do not need a water source.  Depending on factors such as wind, temperature, splashing and design, you will need to add water regularly.  You will need to have a 3 prong 110V GFCI outlet near the fountain.  Most of our fountains only have a 3 – 8 ft cord length once installed in the fountain.  If you do not have an outlet, you will need to consult with a licensed electrician.

As always, if you have any questions feel free to contact us!
